Edgar Allan Poe, geboren 1809 in Boston als Sohn von Schauspielern, gilt als eigenwilligste und faszinierendste Dichterpersönlichkeit im Amerika des 19. Jahrhunderts. Sein kurzes, aber bewegtes Leben, das 1849 in Baltimore unter geheimnisvollen Umständen ein Ende fand, wurde schon bald zur Legende.Charles Baudelaire, geboren 1821 in Paris, begründete als Herausgeber und Übersetzer der Werke Edgar Allan Poes dessen Weltruhm. Mit seinem Gedichtzyklus Les Fleurs du Mal (1857) setzte er ein neues Datum in der Dichtungsgeschichte. Er starb 1867 in seinem Geburtsort. Andreas Nohl wurde 1954 in Mülheim an der Ruhr geboren. Seine Übersetzungen u.a. von Mark Twains 'Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn' und Rudyard Kiplings 'Dschungelbuch' wurden von der Presse hochgelobt. Zuletzt erhielt er den Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt-Preis.
