Jules Michelet (1798-1874) wird als 21-Jähriger Doktor der Philosophie und anschließend Gymnasiallehrer. Nach ersten Veröffentlichungen auf dem Gebiet der modernen Geschichte und einer Berufung an die "École normale supérieure" beginnt er 1828 Deutsch zu lernen und unternimmt eine Reise nach Deutschland sowie 1830 nach Italien. Nach der Julirevolution von 1830 erhält er 1833 einen Lehrstuhl an der Sorbonne für moderne Geschichte, wird in die Akademie und 1838 an das "Collège de France" berufen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hat er bereits mit der Veröffentlichung seiner monumentalen Geschichte Frankreichs begonnen und 1848 erscheinen die ersten beiden Bände seiner Geschichte der Revolution. Jules Michelet begründete als ein patriotischer und dabei antiklerikaler Demokrat eine einflussreiche republikanische Geschichtsschreibung. Nach dem Staatstreich von Napoleon III. und dem verweigerten Eid auf ihn wird er aus dem Staatsdient entlassen, verlässt Paris und lässt sich in Nantes, später in Toulon, nieder. Michelet publiziert unablässig sein vielseitiges und umfangreiches Werk, darunter auch naturhistorische Bücher wie Der Vogel (1856) oder Das Insekt (1857). Am 15. November 1862 erscheint sein Skandalwerk Die Hexe und wird bereits 1863 ins Deutsche übersetzt.
