Marguerite Yourcenar wurde am 8. Juni 1903 in Brüssel geboren, studierte in Frankreich, England und in der Schweiz und wurde Professorin für französische Literatur in New York. 1980 wurde sie als erste Frau in die Académie française gewählt. Sie starb am 18. Dezember 1987 in Maine/USA.
