Werner Hofmann war bis 1990 Direktor der Hamburger Kunsthalle. Neben seiner Vortrags- und Lehrtätigkeit ist er durch Veröffentlichungen zur Kunst des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts sowie durch bedeutende Ausstellungen bekannt geworden.
