There, this fourth wise man learns the recipe from a fellow prisoner, and learns of the existence and meaning of Jesus.

Michel Tournier , 1924 in Paris geboren, studierte Jura, Literatur und Philosophie in Paris und in Deutschland. Bevor er sich der Schriftstellerei zuwandte, arbeitete er einige Zeit als Lektor, Journalist und Übersetzer. Sein erster Roman Freitag oder Im Schoß des Pazifik wurde mit dem Grand Prix du Roman der Académie française ausgezeichnet. Der Erlkönig erhielt 1970 den Prix Goncourt und wurde 1996 unter der Regie Volker Schlöndorffs verfilmt. Tournier starb 2016 in Choisel. Hellmut Waller studierte Jura, um als Generalstaatsanwalt gegen die Verbrechen des Nationalsozialismus zu klagen. 1946 trafen sich Tournier und Waller in Tübingen und freundeten sich an. In Absprache mit Tournier übersetzte Waller den Erlkönig ins Deutsche ebenso wie alle seine folgenden Romane.
