Driven to Abstraction is Rosmarie Waldrop's sixth collection of poetry with New Directions. The first of its two sections, "Sway-Backed Powerlines," consists of five sequences of prose poems whose subject matter ranges from voyages of discovery and the second Iraq war to geometry, memory, and the music of John Cage. Part two, the title sequence, investigates the tendency to abstraction in our lives which, in the West, began with the Renaissance introduction of zero into arithmetic, the vanishing point into perspective, and imaginary money in economics. Driven by the tension between abstraction and the concrete, and written in the shadow of ongoing wars, these poems are among Waldrop's most engaging and thrilling works to date, the writing of a master poet at the height of her creative powers.

Rosmarie Waldrop, 1935 in Kitzingen am Main als Rosmarie Sebald geboren, studierte Literatur- und Musikwissenschaften in Würzburg und Freiburg, bevor sie in den späten Fünfzigerjahren in die USA emigrierte. In den Sechzigern gründete sie mit ihrem Ehemann Keith die Burning Deck Press, einen der maßgeblichen Verlage für Lyrik. Seit 1968 lebt Rosmarie Waldrop in Providence, Rhode Island, und hat an verschiedenen Universitäten gelehrt. Ihr vielfach ausgezeichnetes Werk umfasst unter anderem 20 Bände Lyrik, 4 Essaysammlungen sowie zahlreiche Übersetzungen, etwa von Werken Friedericke Mayröckers, Elke Erbs, Paul Celans oder Edmond Jabès?. Ann Cotten wurde 1982 in Iowa geboren und wuchs in Wien auf. Ihre literarische Arbeit wurde vielfach ausgezeichnet, zuletzt mit dem Hugo-Ball-Preis 2017 und dem Gert-Jonke-Preis 2021. Sie lebt in Wien und Berlin. Ben Lerner wurde 1979 in Topeka, Kansas, geboren. Als Schüler war er US-Meister im Debattieren. Lerner ist der Autor von zwei international gefeierten Romanen - Abschied von Atocha und 22:04 -, drei Gedichtbänden, dem Essay Warum hassen wir die Lyrik sowie verschiedenen kollaborativen Arbeiten, u. a. zusammen mit Thomas Demand und Alexander Kluge. Lerner hat zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen erhalten, u. a. das Guggenheim Fellowship und das MacArthur Fellowship. Er ist Professor für Literatur am Brooklyn College und lebt mit seiner Frau und den beiden kleinen Töchtern in New York City.
