MATILDE SERAO kam 1856 im griechischen Patras zur Welt. Sie arbeitete als Lehrerin, Journalistin und Schriftstellerin. Zusammen mit ihrem Ehemann, dem Journalisten und Schriftsteller Edoardo Scarfoglio, gründete sie zwei Tageszeitungen, Il Corriere di Roma (1885) und Il Mattino di Napoli (1892). 1903 rief sie in Neapel als erste Frau in der Geschichte des italienischen Journalismus eine neue Zeitung ins Leben, Il Giorno, die sie bis zu ihrem Tod leitete. Sie galt als Vielschreiberin und verfasste neben ihren journalistischen Texten mehr als vierzig Romane. Matilde Serao starb 1927 an einem Herzinfarkt. Sie ist in Neapel auf dem Friedhof Poggioreale begraben. ULRIKE SCHIMMING übersetzt seit mehr als 25 Jahren Literatur aus dem Italienischen und Englischen. Darunter einen Neapel Krimi von Patrizia Rinaldi, Romane von Tea Ranno und Renata Viganò, aber auch Sachbücher wie die Holocaust-Erinnerungen von Liliana Segre und der Schwestern Andra und Tatiana Bucci. 2018 wurde sie mit dem Deutschen Jugendliteraturpreis in der Sparte Sachbuch für ihre Übersetzung von Gianumberto Accinellis Der Dominoeffekt ausgezeichnet.
