The ancient traditions of Sardinia feature heavily in this early collection. The stories collected in The Queen of Darkness, published in 1902 shortly after Deledda's marriage and move to Rome, reflect her transformation from little-known regional writer to an increasingly fêted and successful mainstream author. The two miniature psycho-dramas that open the collection are followed by stories of Sardinian life in the remote hills around her home town of Nuoro. The stark but beautiful countryside is a backdrop to the passions, misadventures and injustices which shape the lives of its rugged but all too human inhabitants.

Grazia Deledda (1871-1936) publizierte ab 1886 Erzählungen, Gedichte und Romane. Nach der Machtergreifung Mussolinis stellte sie ihr Wirken in dessen Dienst, was ihren Ruhm in der Nachkriegszeit minderte. Sie zählt zu den bedeutendsten italienischen Autorinnen des Naturalismus. 1926 erhielt sie den Nobelpreis für Literatur.Monika Lustig, 1953 geboren, studierte in Heidelberg Philosophie und Germanistik. Nach dem Studium wanderte sie nach Italien aus und arbeitete über 20 Jahre als Sprachlehrerin, Verlagsmitarbeiterin und Übersetzerin. Unter den von ihr übersetzten Autor:innen sind Andrea Camilleri, Simonetta Agnello Hornby, Marcello Fois u. a. 2019 gründete sie den Verlag Edition CONVERSO - Mediterrane Sprachwelten.KLAUDIA RUSCHKOWSKI, 1959 in Dortmund geboren, Autorin, Dramaturgin, Herausgeberin und literarische Übersetzerin aus dem Italienischen und Englischen. Sie lebt in Italien und Deutsch-land und konzipiert Literatur, Kunst- und Kulturprojekte. 2021 erschien im S. Marix Verlag ihr Roman Rot, sagte er.
