Shashi Tharoor wurde 1956 in London als Kind einer keralischen Diplomatenfamilie geboren und wuchs in Indien auf. Er ist Jurist, Politiker und zählt zu den bedeutendsten zeitgenössischen indischen Schriftstellern. Als Bestseller-Autor hat er mehr als zwanzig Bücher, Belletristik wie Sachbücher, veröffentlicht und ist darüber hinaus ein bekannter Kritiker und Kolumnist. Tharoor hat als Diplomat bei der UNO-Kommission für Flüchtlinge in Genf, Singapur und New York gearbeitet. Von 2002 bis 2007 war er einer der Stellvertreter von UNO-Generalsekretär Kofi Annan und von 2009 bis 2010 Staatsminister im indischen Außenministerium. Im indischen Parlament zählt er heute zu dessen prominentesten Mitgliedern.
