This novel, which resists the temptation to portray Alexander in the mantle of purely romantic legend, covers his life from age fifteen to his death at age thirty-two. Typical of Kazantzakis, this story, like the legends of old, is entertaining as well as instructive for readers of all ages.

Nikos Kazantzakis wurde am 18. Februar 1883 in Heraklion geboren. Er studierte zunächst Jura in Athen, dann Staatswissenschaften in Paris. Neben seiner Professur an der juristischen Fakultät von Athen übersetzte er und schrieb Romane, darunter »Die letzte Versuchung« und »Griechische Passion«. Mit dem autobiographischen Roman »Alexis Sorbas«, 1946 erschienen, erlangte er Weltruf. Kazantzakis starb am 26. Oktober 1957 in Freiburg.
