There is a growing interest internationally in research that helps us to understand the best ways to help young children engage with the curriculum in order that they may have the best possible life chances. This text helps to address these issues and consists of seminal articles derived from the forty-year history of the journal Education 3-13'.

Mark Brundett has taught in Secondary, Middle and Primary Schools and was a headteacher for a number of years. He is currently Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Leicester and Visting Professor of Education at the University of Hertfordshire.Ian Terrell taught in schools for a number of years before going on to teach in higher education. He is currently Principal Lecturer at Ultralab, which is part of Anglia Polytechnic University
