Victor-Marie Vicomte Hugo, geboren am 26. Februar 1802 in Besançon, verstorben am 22. Mai 1885 in Paris, war ein französischer Schriftsteller und Politiker. Er verfasste Gedichte, Romane und Dramen und betätigte sich als literarischer, aber auch politischer Publizist. Mehrfach war er als Angehöriger der Pairskammer, Abgeordneter oder Senator direkt politisch aktiv. Neben Molière, Voltaire oder Balzac gilt er als einer der größten Autoren Frankreichs. Sein Schaffen kann teils der Romantik, teils dem Realismus zugeordnet werden.
