Recent attempts to challenge the primacy of reason--and its realization in foundationalist accounts of knowledge and cognitive formulations of human action--have focused on processes of discourse. Drawing from social and literary accounts of discourse, Kenneth Gergen considers these challenges to empiricism under the banner of "social construction." His aim is to outline the major elements of a social constructionist perspective, to illustrate its potential, and to initiate debate on the future of constructionist pursuits in the human sciences generally and psychology in particular.

Kenneth J. Gergen ist Professor für Psychologie am Swarthmore College und Gründer des Taos Instituts, einer Non-Profit-Organisation, die sich mit der Weiterentwicklung des Sozialen Konstruktionismus und seinen gesellschaftlichen Anwendungsfeldern (u. a. Therapie, Organisationsberatung und Erziehung) beschäftigt. Forschungsstipendien der Guggenheim-Stiftung, der Fulbright Stiftung und der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung führten ihn auch nach Deutschland. Hier wurde er u. a. durch sein Buch "Das übersättigte Selbst: Identitätsprobleme im heutigen Leben" bekannt. Mary Gergen ist emeritierte Professorin für Psychologie und Gender-Studien an der Penn State University. Nach ihrem Ph. D. in Sozialpsychologie arbeitete sie zunächst als psychologische Beraterin bei AT&T. Zusammen mit Kenneth Gergen gründete sie das Taos Institut. Heute betreut sie Doktoranden und lehrt Feministische Theorie an einem College in Pennsylvania. Außerdem ist sie Mitherausgeberin eines elekronischen Newsletters, der ein positives Bild vom Altern vermitteln will.
